Try Rowing & Learn to Row

Adult Beginner Rowing Training

Want to row recreationally?

If you want to try rowing  for recreation only, Star Club offers 'Try Rowing Courses’ for recreational beginners which are held over 6 consecutive Sunday mornings  - 09:30 till Midday.

Any missed sessions will count as one of your 6 sessions unless a session is cancelled by the Club due to inclement weather, river
conditions or competition events on the river.

All training sessions comprise of:-

-09:30 till 10:00 Concept 2 ergo training in the Club’s gym to establish basic technique and develop fitness followed by -10:00 till Midday on the water in a single training boat – you in the boat on your own.

You will follow a tried and tested programme which will give you some basic water skills & develop your confidence and competence on the water.  The course is not designed to make you into a fully proficient oarsman - just give you a taste.

The cost of a 'Try Rowing Course’ is £150 for all 6 sessions.

After completion of the ‘Try Rowing Course’ you will be invited to  join the Club’s Recreational Squad whorow a couple of times each week normally Tuesday evenings and Sunday mornings but otherwise by arrangement.

See the Membership page for current rates of subscription.

If, after 6 weeks you feel you need more development before joining the Recreational Squad, the option exists to enrol for another 6 week ‘Try Rowing Course’. This will be subject to availability.

If you decide to change your mind and want to row competitively

and can meet the Club’s requirements, the option exists to transfer to the Club’s  ‘Learn To Row Programme’ (LTRP).

Want to row competitively?

For those who have a commitment to personal fitness & want to row competitively, Star Club offers the 'Learn To Row Programme' (LTRP) which is far more comprehensive than the 'Try Rowing Course' option.

LTRP is open ended and geared totally to the progress of the individual – not restricted to a fixed number of sessions.

LTRP is a structured programme and when the required level of boat confidence and competence is achieved you will 'fledge' to the Development Squad or other suitable training squad for ongoing development.

The average number of sessions required by an adult beginner is about 12 but there is no upper limit - everyone develops differently.

LTRP beginners join the Club as Senior or Masters members and will pay a monthly subscription.

LTRP is best suited to those individuals who have a commitment to personal fitness and are prepared to commit to a minimum of 4 training  sessions each week - not all of which need to be at the Club or in a  boat - eg. long distance swimming / running / cycling / gym work etc.

LTRP sessions are every Sunday Morning -

09:30 till 10:00 in our gym on a concept 2 ergo machine to develop technique, followed by 10:00 till Midday on the water
